When replacing the duct beats cleaning it again

Two or three cycles to dry one load. The laundry room is hot and humid. No visible flap movement at the exterior hood. Lint on the siding below the vent. A damp musty smell from the drum. Those point at the duct itself, not the dryer.

Flexible foil is the usual culprit. Crushed foil duct behind pedestal-mounted front-loaders cannot be re-rounded. It work-hardens, splits at the ribs, and holds lint in every valley. Replacement means rigid galvanized pipe, joints pointed downstream so lint passes, sealed with foil tape instead of screws. Screws hang threads into the airstream and start the next clog.

Runs here vary. Short rim-joist side-wall exits in splits and ranches are straightforward. Garage-corner dryers venting through block or a stud wall need the garage separation kept intact. Second-floor laundry rooms with long attic runs to roof caps condense in cold weather, so slope and support matter more than pipe brand. Interior condo and townhome closets tie into vertical chases or booster-fan assemblies, which limits what can be re-routed at all.

Not every bad vent needs replacing. Intact rigid metal on a short run usually just needs cleaning and a working hood.
